The central grid for a short first stay

Melbourne's city centre is a useful default for a first visit because many meals, galleries, shops and transport connections can be combined on foot. But the grid is not one small point. Compare the hotel address with the station or airport transfer stop you will use, especially when arriving with luggage.

The western side can suit arrivals around Southern Cross, while the eastern side may appeal for theatres and the streets around Parliament. Neither is universally better. Test two actual journeys: the arrival with bags and the route home after your likely evening activity.

Southbank for riverside evenings

Southbank works well if you want a riverside walk, performances or visits around the arts precinct to shape the stay. Check which bridge you will use to reach the city centre and how far the property lies from it. A room described as Southbank may be much farther from the river than the name suggests.

Apartment-style accommodation can be useful for laundry or a longer visit. Confirm that cooking and washing facilities are in your booked unit, and check the arrival procedure. A self-contained stay is less convenient if key collection takes place at another address after a long journey.

Carlton and Fitzroy for neighbourhood time

An inner neighbourhood makes sense when cafés, food and local streets are priorities rather than occasional excursions. Carlton and Fitzroy have different personalities from the hotel-heavy city grid, but you will need to consider the journey to central attractions. Look at the exact tram connection and the walk from the stop.

Do not assume every nearby tram trip is free. Melbourne's Free Tram Zone has defined boundaries; neighbourhood outings can take you beyond them. Check current payment requirements before travelling. A room slightly closer to a useful route can save more effort than one with a larger floor area but awkward connections.

St Kilda when bayside time matters

St Kilda is a more deliberate choice. It suits visitors who want repeated time by the bay and are comfortable travelling into the centre. For a two-night trip dominated by museums and laneways, staying centrally may be simpler and St Kilda can become an outing.

Finally, examine noise, stairs, luggage storage and the room's actual layout. A central address above a lively street may be enjoyable for one traveller and frustrating for another. Choose the area that supports your ordinary day, then compare properties within it. The right base lets you spend less time organising Melbourne and more time exploring it.
