Start with a small area

Melbourne's laneways are easiest to enjoy when you stop treating them as a collection to complete. Choose a cluster in the central grid and spend a morning there. Flinders Lane and the streets leading towards the main shopping area provide plenty of opportunities to move between open streets, narrower lanes and covered arcades.

Save a map for orientation, then look up often enough to notice details above eye level. Shopfronts, building entrances and upper façades can be as interesting as the most photographed wall. You do not need a rigid route, but a clear starting area prevents the morning becoming repeated crossings of the same large street.

Pause for something you actually want

A café stop is part of the outing, not a delay in it. Choose somewhere with a menu, atmosphere and seating that suit you. A queue is evidence of popularity, not a requirement to join. If you only want a coffee, avoid spending most of your available time waiting for a full brunch.

Browse shops according to your interests and check their opening hours if one is a priority. Some lanes feel different early in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening. A place lively after dark may be quiet during your daytime visit, which is not a sign that you have arrived at the wrong destination.

Photograph without blocking the lane

Street art changes and a familiar mural may no longer be there. Enjoy the current work rather than searching for an exact image from an old guide. Keep clear of private entrances and allow people working in the area to pass.

Covered arcades offer a different experience, with architecture and small retailers rather than an outdoor wall of art. They also make a useful option during a shower. Do not assume every passage remains open at all hours; follow posted access information and avoid entering spaces clearly intended only for residents or staff.

End with a neighbourhood meal

After an hour or two, choose lunch in the centre or continue to one nearby area rather than extending the laneway search indefinitely. Chinatown can provide a natural change of scene, while a river walk gives you more open space after narrow streets.

The best route is the one you can follow without constantly consulting a list. Leave room for one unexpected turn and one longer stop. That is enough to make the morning feel like exploring rather than checking off a map.
