Start with the boat, not the hotel photograph
Cairns and Port Douglas both provide access to reef experiences, but choosing a base is easier after comparing the trips that suit your group. Look at vessel style, time on the water, snorkelling support, options for non-swimmers and the departure location. The nearest hotel to a beach is not necessarily the most convenient hotel for a morning reef departure.
If you have only a few nights, avoid changing towns simply to sample both. Packing and transfers use the same hours that could provide a weather margin or a relaxed day after the boat. Choose one base and make it work well.
Cairns for a practical city base
Cairns can suit travellers who want a broad choice of accommodation, meals and excursions within a city setting. A central address can make marina departures and evenings easier, but inspect the actual walking distance. Properties using the wider Cairns name may be far from the centre.
The northern beaches offer a different style of stay. They can be appealing when resort or beachside time is the priority, but transfers into the city need to be included in any early tour plan. Ask whether pickup is available for your exact property rather than assuming every Cairns-area hotel is covered.
Port Douglas for a smaller holiday-town rhythm
Port Douglas suits travellers who want meals around Macrossan Street, time near Four Mile Beach and a more compact town setting. Resorts extend beyond the central area, so decide whether you will walk, use a shuttle or keep a car. A large pool and spacious room may be worth the extra movement, but only if that is how you want to spend your free days.
It also makes sense to consider Port Douglas when a rainforest outing north of town is part of the plan. Still, a Daintree visit is a separate journey with its own access and timing. Do not assume proximity removes the need to organise it properly.
Compare the whole stay
Add airport transfers, tour pickups, meals and any car parking to the accommodation price. A lower nightly rate can be offset by repeated transport. If one person will not join the reef trip, think about how they would spend that day from the chosen base.
For a four-night stay, keep at least one day adaptable around the main marine outing. Follow current local advice for swimming; tropical beaches are not interchangeable with a supervised reef excursion or a hotel pool. Either base can work well when it supports your actual daily plans rather than an imagined generic tropical holiday.
