Place the stop within the whole driving day
The Pinnacles are in Nambung National Park near Cervantes. Decide where you will sleep before deciding how late to visit. A stop on the way north works well when the remaining drive is modest; it works less well when you still have several hours of road ahead after sunset.
Compare the coastal route with your actual start and finish, including fuel and a meal. A navigation estimate covers movement, not time among the formations. Give the park a real block in the itinerary rather than treating it as a petrol stop with better scenery.
Walk even if you use the driving route
Seeing the limestone formations from a vehicle and spending time among them are different experiences. Where permitted, park and follow the designated walking route. Moving slowly makes the scale and shapes easier to appreciate than photographing them only through a windscreen.
Read the current park instructions before entering a driving loop. Vehicle suitability, access and conditions need to be checked for your own trip. Keep to the intended routes and do not climb formations. If you have a caravan or trailer, establish the parking arrangements in advance.
Choose light without creating a late drive
Morning or later-afternoon light can add texture, but the best time is also the time that leaves a comfortable onward journey. In hot conditions, shorten exposed walking and carry water. A hat and shoes suitable for sand are more useful here than dressing only for a car journey.
The discovery centre can add context when its opening hours fit your visit. Check those hours separately from park access. If it is closed, do not assume the park visit itself has failed; the formations remain the central reason for stopping.
Use Cervantes for the practical part
Cervantes is a useful place to consider for a meal or overnight in the surrounding area. Staying locally makes an unhurried late visit easier. If continuing toward Geraldton, protect enough daylight and avoid adding another long detour just because it appears on the same coast.
On a return drive, the Pinnacles can also be the final major outing before Perth. In that case, keep the city arrival, vehicle return and any flight separate from sightseeing. A flexible park stop is much more pleasant than watching the clock beside every formation.
