What makes the drive worthwhile
The Grand Pacific Drive is best enjoyed as a sequence of stops along the coast, not as a faster way to reach the South Coast. Sea Cliff Bridge, the Illawarra beaches and towns such as Kiama give the journey its interest. If you need to arrive in Jervis Bay by a fixed early time, choose a simpler route or begin with fewer expectations.
Start by marking your overnight destination and one place for lunch. Then choose an outdoor stop between them. This keeps the day coherent and makes it easier to drop an optional detour if traffic or weather changes. A comfortable road trip needs spare time as much as attractive scenery.
Sea Cliff Bridge on foot
The bridge's pedestrian path lets you experience the coast beyond the windscreen. Use legitimate parking and walk the designated route, allowing enough time to return to the car. Avoid stopping on the road or following unofficial tracks above the bridge for a photograph.
Wind and sun can be stronger on an exposed coastal section than in the car park. Take a layer and water if you are making more than a brief stop. Travellers with accessibility needs should examine the approach as well as the bridge path itself; the route from a particular parking area can be the more demanding part.
Pick a town for a proper break
Wollongong can support a meal and waterfront outing, while Kiama offers another useful place to stretch the day. Choose based on where you will be when you are ready for lunch. It is better to explore one town calmly than to keep eating in the car while chasing the next viewpoint.
At Kiama, treat the blowhole as a natural feature whose appearance depends on conditions. If it is quiet, enjoy the headland and surrounding town rather than waiting for a guaranteed display. Keep behind barriers and supervise children around the coast.
Leave room for the last leg
If continuing towards Berry, Nowra or Jervis Bay, remember that the scenic stops are not the end of the driving. Check accommodation arrival arrangements and buy groceries before a late check-in. A holiday-house stay can be less convenient on the first evening if the nearest shop is already closed.
For a return day trip to Sydney, set a sensible turnaround point. You do not have to reach the southern end of a named touring route for the day to count. Turn back while there is enough time for a comfortable return, and keep another stretch of coast for a future overnight trip.
