Choose the beach by the complete journey
Cottesloe and Scarborough are useful starting points when planning a Perth beach outing without a car. Enter the beach itself as the destination and inspect the final walking leg. A railway station or bus stop with a familiar place name may still leave a meaningful distance to the water.
Use your actual departure time and look at the return as well. Evening services and weekend arrangements can differ from a weekday morning. Save the route and stop name before heading onto the sand, especially if your phone will spend the day packed away.
For a short visit, choose a beach where a meal, toilets and a promenade walk can provide alternatives to swimming. This makes the outing worthwhile if wind changes the conditions. A remote-looking stretch on a map may require more walking and fewer facilities than you want for a first trip.
If you are already visiting Fremantle, consider whether a nearby coastal outing fits better than crossing the metropolitan area for another beach. Combining geographically close places usually gives you more time outside and less time changing buses.
Carry less, but include the useful things
A towel, water, sun protection and dry clothing are easier to manage than a large picnic setup on public transport. Keep a light layer for the return and a separate bag for wet items. Wear footwear comfortable enough for the walk between the stop and the beach.
Follow local swimming notices and flags. If the sea is unsuitable, turn the visit into a coast walk and lunch. Having travelled by train or bus does not create an obligation to swim, and the beach can still be an enjoyable part of a Perth stay.
Avoid a tight final connection
Do not plan the last possible service as your only route home. Check disruptions before leaving and give yourself time to rinse off, change and locate the stop. If sunset is the main attraction, verify how the journey works after dark.
For a departure day, keep luggage storage and the airport transfer separate from the beach outing. A shorter morning near the coast is easier to manage than a full day followed by a rushed collection of bags. The best beach choice is the one that fits comfortably into the rest of your day.
