Decide whether the drive is a transfer or a touring day
The quickest sensible journey and the most enjoyable touring route are not always the same plan. If you leave Perth after collecting a rental car, dealing with luggage and shopping, treat the first day conservatively. A late start is a good reason to choose one stop instead of several.
Before leaving, check the route from the actual collection depot. Allow time to understand the vehicle and connect navigation while parked. A rural arrival after restaurant kitchens close is avoidable if you organise dinner and essential supplies before setting out.
Use Busselton as a genuine break
Busselton can give the journey a waterfront pause rather than another brief service-station stop. If you want to visit the jetty, check which experience you are booking and allow its full duration. A walk, a meal and a booked attraction make a substantial stop; they should not be squeezed into the same hour.
Keep your luggage out of sight while parked and take essentials with you. If the weather is uninviting, shorten the waterfront visit and arrive at your accommodation earlier. There is no obligation to complete every planned detour on the outward journey.
When to stop overnight before Margaret River
If your flight lands in Perth late in the day, spending the first night near the city or along a sensible initial stage can be better than collecting a vehicle and pushing south tired. That changes the first regional morning from recovery into useful holiday time. Compare the extra accommodation against the time you would otherwise spend driving in darkness.
For a longer coastal journey, a night in Busselton can also be purposeful. You can enjoy the foreshore after day visitors leave and continue after breakfast, leaving Margaret River arrival day for a local outing. For a two-night weekend, however, adding this stop may fragment the trip. In that case, leave Perth early, make a shorter Busselton break and keep both nights at the final base.
Do not mistake the town for the entire region
Accommodation labelled Margaret River may be in town, near the coast or on a rural road elsewhere in the region. Save the exact address before mobile reception becomes less dependable. Ask about check-in, driveway conditions and whether supplies are available nearby.
A central-town stay supports walking to dinner. A coastal or forest setting can be better for quiet mornings, but it changes how often you drive. Plan the following day's outings around that choice. Do not make your arrival afternoon a separate excursion to the opposite end of the region.
Give the return trip a different purpose
If you have spare time on the way back, use it for a stop you deliberately omitted on arrival. This is more manageable than duplicating a crowded outward itinerary. Protect the final journey if you have a flight: fuel, returning the car and airport procedures are separate tasks.
For a weekend, two unhurried nights in one location can be more rewarding than three hotels. For a longer trip, continue toward the forests or south coast only when you have nights available there. The fact that a road continues beyond Margaret River does not make an additional destination a short detour.
